Rhodes and Millsaps split a doubleheader today, with Rhodes taking the first game 10-9 before dropping the second game by a score of 12-4. With the Lynx down 9-8 with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th and runners at second and third, Cindy Bitters delivered a pinch-hit single down the right field line to give the Lynx a 10-9 win. In game 2, the Majors blew open a 7-4 game with 5 runs in the 6th to earn their only victory of the weekend.
After the Majors picked up a run in the 1st inning of game 1, the Lynx answered with 4 of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Kelli Zomer led the inning off with a double to left, then scored on an RBI single from Allison Conn. With 2 outs, Sara Bowen came through with a 2-run homer, her 4th of the year, and Elise Suna followed that with a solo shot of her own to give the Lynx a 4-1 lead after 1 inning.
The Majors added a run in each of the second and third innings to bring the score to 4-3, but the Lynx answered with 3 runs in the home half of the third. Conn led off with a single, and after back to back singles by Bowen and Suna loaded the bases, Armanda Venezia delivered a 2-run single to give the Lynx a 6-3 lead. Kelli Zomer later drew a bases loaded walk to cap off a 3-run 3rd inning and give the Lynx a 7-3 lead.
Rebekah Moore hit a solo home run in the 4th to give the Lynx an 8-3 lead, which is where the score remained until the top of the 6th. Erica Douglas led off the Majors' 6th with a single, followed by a walk by Allison Tarbox. After a wild pitch and a strikeout, the Majors has runners on second and third with 1 out. Tiffany Ladnier grounded to second, scoring Douglas, leaving a runner on third with 2-outs and the Lynx leading 8-4.
After a double from Kasey Thiboseaux and a walk to Jennifer McKinley, the Rhodes lead had been cut to 8-5 with runners on the corners and 2 outs. Karoline Kremers grounded to third, but Jennifer Whatley's throw was off the mark, allowing Thibodeaux to score and cutting the Rhodes lead to 8-6. Millsaps freshman Jenny Laird then delivered the big blow, a 3-run home run to left center to give the Majors a 9-8 lead.
The Lynx went down in order in the 6th, and the Majors could not push across any insurance runs in the top of the 7th, sending the game to the bottom of the 7th with Millsaps leading 9-8.
Bowen led off the 7th with a double for the Lynx, and a walk by Armanda Venezia gave the Lynx runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Whatley hit a sharp ground ball to short, resulting in Bowen being forced out at third and leaving Rhodes with 1st and 2nd with 2 outs.
A passed ball allowed Venezia and Whatley to advance to second and third, and pinch hitter Cindy Bitters lined a 3-1 pitch to right, scoring both Venezia and Whatley and giving the Lynx a thrilling 10-9, come from behind win.
Sara Bowen picked up her 11th win of the season, giving up 10 hits and just 4 earned runs while striking out 6. Bowen and Suna both went 3 for 4 with a home run at the plate, while Conn was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored to lead the Lynx offense.
Millsaps scored first again in game 2, notching 2 runs on just 1 hit, but the Lynx again answered, just as they did in game 1. Zomer led off with a double, and after Caroline Cooper walked, Allison Conn delivered an RBI double to score Zomer. WIth runners on second and third, Rebekah Moore belted the first pitch over the left center field fence to give the Lynx a 4-2 lead.
The home run was Moore's 7th of the season, and the 21st of her career, making her the career leader in home runs in the SCAC.
The score remained 4-2 until the third, when the Majors scored 4 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks to take a 6-4 lead. Millsaps starter Kasey Thibodeaux held the Lynx offense at bay, allowing just 2 hits over the final 5-innings, and never allowed more than 1 baserunner in an inning. The Majors added a run in the 4th to extend their lead to 7-4, then took advantage of 2 Lynx errors to score 5-runs in the 6th and cruise to a 12-4 win.
Cindy BItters took the loss for the Lynx, falling to 7-4 on the season. Conn was the only Lynx to pick up multiple hits, going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
Rhodes is now 26-6, and has won 23 of their last 26 games. The Lynx are 11-1 in SCAC play, standing in second place in the SCAC East behind #15-ranked Depauw, who is 7-0. Rhodes will travel to Greencastle this weekend for a 4-game series with Depauw with the SCAC East title on the line.
